It's been called the "Flabbergasting 99", but that's a somewha tongue-in-cheek (or pompous) way of saying once you get past the array of drive, fuzz and distortion pedals, a world of other sound-altering and mind-bending pedals await. A compressor is a pedal effect that controls the volume of an instrument. It automatically lowers the volume on the loud sections and boosts the volume on the quiet sections. Clean boost pedals add a transparent volume boost; however, many clean boost pedals intentionally color your tone when turned on. A phaser is often used to achieve a Wah sound, or a sound that is similar to a Leslie rotating speaker. A chorus will virtually mimic the sound of a choir - in a choir of human voices, there will always be slight variations of pitch and timing. Delay pedals record an incoming signal and replays it several times, while allowing control over time, feedback and level. A reverb pedal is used to mimic natural reverb and to create a sense of depth and space in your guitar tone. Wahs and filters that boost certain frequencies while cutting others, in a faster and more dramatic manner than simply turning a tone knob on your guitar. Loopers record and loop musical ideas, allowing you to record as many overdubs as you want over that original loop, resulting in complex and lush musical soundscapes.
