Steve Pierson

Searing, Yet Soulful Blues

Entering the world of electric blues is California based guitarist and singer Steve Pierson. Assembling a crack team of backing musicians, Pierson released his debut CD, Blues Head, featuring well-crafted, smoldering blues tracks topped with plenty of soulful guitar playing. Pierson seems especially adept at the slow blues numbers such as "Secrets" and "Found Somebody To Love", but can also rip on the uptempo numbers, such as the wah-wah inflicted "Bad Condition". "I Chose To Sing The Blues" features a great example of a clean, yet bone-cutting solo; Pierson clearly has all the requisite blues tones at his fingertips (even acoustic, check out the slide work on "Melinda's Eyes" and "Cold In My Bed"). However, it takes years to develop the touch to use those tones skillfully - Pierson has the experience, the chops and the edge to pull it off. Steve Pierson was originally profiled in the October-November, 2000 edition of The Undiscovered.

alb Steve started playing music at a young age, starting on piano. When he was 13, his older brother taught him to play a couple of chords on the guitar, and he was sold. Steve has always wanted to play blues, drawing on influences such as Eric Clapton, The Allman Brothers, Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan. He then discovered bluesmen such as Albert Collins, Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf, Taj Mahal, Robert Cray and the Kings. Steve later moved to California from Maryland and played both in blues bands as well as solo acoustic gigs. He recently put together a 'dream team' of his favorite musicians to record his debut album.

This is only the beginning for this young "blues head", and promises more great music to come.

Andrew Kelly Back

Blazing Instrumental Funk Rock

We don't get too many instrumental guitar CDs in that also feature impressive sax work as well, but that helps makes Nashville's Andrew Kelly Back stand out. His CD-R of eleven funky yet heavy instrumentals is entitled Don't Taste The Air, and even though Back has changed his musical approach since recording these tunes, the music holds up as good listening, each piece being distinctive and colorful. Unlike a lot of guitar players, Back can play equally well slow or fast (his overdriven and clean solos are equally phatt). "Fullcourt" and "A Dance With A Little A" are imaginative compositions, and a slower number "Kaleidoscope Waltz" is another real gem, with plenty of soulful playing. The CD-R also features some impressive playing from the other musicians, notably Aaron Sterling on drums and Chris West on sax and flute. Andrew Kelly Back was originally profiled in the December-January, 2000 edition of The Undiscovered.

pic Andrew began playing guitar in 1984. Hearing three guitarists changed his life: Steve Vai, Eric Johnson and Steve Morse, and started him on his personal musical quest. Andrew attended Three Rivers College majoring in music, while participating in bluegrass barn jams in the foothills of the Ozarks. He went on to study classical and jazz at Southeast Missouri University and Belmont University. Later, a friendship with guitarist Shawn Lane taught Andrew more about music than he could ever learn in school. He currently is most heavily influenced by jazz pianist Keith Jarrett.

Currently, Back is writing and rehearsing with a Jazz/R&B/Fusion band, as well as planning a number of CD projects he hopes will expose him to a larger audience. His goal is to have people listen to his music and make their judgements about it and let it take them where they want to go.
