Following His Vision In Jazz

The John Hart Trio has been together for four years and in their latest CD collection, Indivisible (HEP 2008), the trio explore standards "A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square","Single Petal Of A Rose", "Blame it on My Youth" plus the funky satiric "Clone Me" and "Not in My Generation", along with six other instrumental jazz numbers. Hart is a wonderful player, confidently exploring themes with electric and acoustic guitar lines that scale the entire fretboard, along with syncopated chording/comping moments that will bring your foot to the floor more times than not. The amazing story here is that all the material for the CD was recorded in two days; most of what you hear is first takes. Having said that, if you get a chance to see the John Hart Trio live, you'll no doubt be in for a wonderful evening. Highly recommended. The John Hart Trio were originally profiled in the December-January, 2004 edition of The Undiscovered.

alb The John Hart Trio has developed a wide-ranging repertoire of standards and originals over the past several years. Scott Yanow writes in the All Music Guide, "A fairly distinctive modern mainstream guitarist, John Hart has impressed many with his fine recordings as a leader for Blue Note and Concord. He began on the guitar when he was 12, graduated from the University of Miami in 1983, and moved to New York City the following year. Among his most significant associations were with Terumasa Hino, Larry Goldings, and particularly Jack McDuff, with whom he toured and recorded."

In addition, Hart has been a busy music educator and performed with many top jazz artists, including Jimmy Smith, Lou Donaldson, James Moody, Mike Mainieri, the Maria Schneider Orchestra, and Steve Allen, in addition to leading his own groups."

Jazz With Blues-Drenched Phrasing

Or is it blues with jazz-drenched phrasing? You be the judge when you listen to Richie Hart's new trio project Blues In The Alley. The CD, which features Hart's guitar with bassist Rick Petrone, drummer Joe Corsello, and special guests Pete Levin (keyboards) and Gerry Niewood (sax), offers jazz/blues instrumentals which cook ("The Fox", "Blues In The Alley") and smolder ("Black Pearls", the classic "Autumn Leaves").. Hart's a solid writer too, as evidenced on originals such as "Fresh Air", "On A High Note", and the aforementioned "Blues In The Alley". An interesting closing track is his "West Side Story Medley", a quick-hitter at three minutes that succinctly displays his abilities in a solo guitar setting - nice! Richie Hart was originally profiled in the December-January, 2004 edition of The Undiscovered.

pic Richie has been performing and teaching jazz for over 35 years. He has a bachelor's degree from Berklee College of Music and a Master's Degree from Lehman College. He is presently an Associate Professor of Jazz Guitar at Berklee College of Music. Richie has performed and/or recorded with some of the biggest names in jazz including Ron Carter, Jimmy Cobb, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Jack McDuff, Don Patterson, Harold Ousley, Houston Person and Etta Jones, Hubert Laws, Freddie Hubbard, Danny Stiles, Phil Wilson, and Herb Pomeroy, Roy Hargrove, Lany Willis, Guillermo Franco and Roberta Gambarini, to name a few. The Richie Hart Trio has performed in jazz clubs including the Regatta Bar, Boston, The Blue Note, NYC, the 63rd Street Steak House, NYC as well as at festivals including the Berkshire Jazz Festival.

Hart is a clinician for Guild Guitars and strings and in addition to his position at Berklee, he is currently performing with his trio.
