The Joel Newton Situation is a New York City-based "jazz" group that has very little to do with traditional jazz but has a lot to do with making strikingly original, intense, and passionate music, in the free, forward-looking spirit of jazz. On One, the four JNS boys (Joel Newton, Lars Aakesson: guitars; Toshi Someya: electric bass; Chris Michael: drums) take their jazz backgrounds and mix it up with all the other music they've been involved with over the years: rock, funk, folk, classical, electro-techno, etc. The result is not a gratuitous eclectic "sampler," but rather a fresh, unified sound that transcends genre and taps into every mood--humor, madness, tenderness, euphoria, perplexity.
