Code 3's second recording, Lift Off!, offers the group's clever melodicism and cozy vibes on an almost one hour, eleven track, instrumental fusion offering. Guitarist Jeff Miley, who also wrote five of the tunes, is equally comfortable delivering wonderfully lyrical, overdriven lines, or clean, jazz-inspired phrases. His playing, as on the group's self-titled debut, is marked by thoughtful, cliche-free linear excursions, unexpected melodic leaps and imaginative chording. Bassist Doug Shreeve penned the remaining six compositions (rooted in Holdsworthian and Sternian fusion), and along with Miley, lets his instrument speak and blend well with the drumming provided by Eric Wells. Lift Off! is a very 'live' sounding record, which is enhanced further by the interaction and interplay between the trio members. Code 3's music will appeal to listeners seeking well-rounded fusion performed by sophisticated and experienced musicians.
