The Tenth Degree, from the Chris Shahin Band, is an imaginative and diverse blend of guitar-driven instrumental surf, jazz, and rock. Exlporing territory between Dick Dale, Andy Summers and Chuck Berry, guitarist Shahin uses all the sonic signatures of surf, including guttural, low register lines and reverb-drenched, open string fusillades. What sets The Tenth Degree apart is the fact that Shahin's jazzier influences (including Pat Metheny John McLaughlin and Jim Hall) creep into the arrangements, lending an eclectic flavor to songs such as "Surf's Down" and injecting an ethnic quality to tracks such as "Baja Cactus". Fans of guitar-laden, innovative surf music --- take notice!
