Written on Zooma Beach CA. In 1995. The first riff that begins to clarify the direction that the album is going to take. The title also embodies the forward motion and energy of the track. The beach is calm, the horizon darkens, the gulls are unsettled.

Rock `n` roll swagger on the 12-string bass, riff like a big snake burrowing through the undergrowth. Written on the acquisition of a new instrument, instant inspiration. Strange encounter by the wayside - we know who you are.

Intro realised with Kyma, my computer sound design system. Kyma produces all electronics/strange noises on this album, it will be coming on stage with me. 10 string bass, my new main instrument. The 12-strings are very big indeed and this guitar is much more manageable. The tuning is from low E to high C in five courses of double (fundamental + octave) strings.

Earliest riff written 1994 at the time of the Sporting Life sessions. I wrote it on a walk in the coutrysideand then returned to the studio to find that it was extremely difficult to play, hence the title B. is for Broken.

The call of the swamp. Bass lap steel in full cry with overdubbed (original) Fender Jazz bass and Hammond organ. Highly enjoyable writing for and conducting members of the London Symphony orchestra, nice to hear classical musicians nailing both the vibe of the track so effortlessly, not to mention the final fughetta. This will be fun on stage.

An original blues for bass lap steel guitar(s). In the Zeppelin days, I used to carry an old Gibson lap steel with me to play in hotel rooms so got a lot of practice. Diamanda asked me to play it on a track on Sporting Lifeand I subsequently used it on two numbers on the tour. .

The last riff written for the album. A nice edgy/desperate vibe about it with a suitably manic 10-string bass solo before it plunges over a cliff with no survivors. A perfect end to the day.
