ou have to love the underground as far as bands and solo artists and the ones who could care less if they ever get signed. I'm not saying that for this shredder but I give him a huge pat on the back for being so "multi-purpose". This guy had no problem spending the extra cash to get a studio (the freedom and liberty to play and record what you want and tell everyone to "f*ck off"!) as well as his knowledge of graphic art design, etc as he did this whole CD and promo kit himself; that's what I call dedicated.
Greg comes out of New York and is one of many new generation 7-stringers to come along as it's a very steadily growing piece of arsenal. His rhythms, due to the 7-string are very Martone or Kopyto-ish and does some lightning-fast sweeps and catchy solos that range from Jazz/Funk/Blues to Metal; plenty of diversity! The songwriting is unorthodox and reminders of "not right" guitarists Joboj, Zappa, Eklundh, Bochar and Vai despite the mentioned influences Greg has as Holdsworth, Howe, Henderson and Page. The CD contains 9 tracks and is just a hair under 45 minutes with exceptional guitar skill but the ultimate nightmare also lingers on this CD...the use of a drum machine! Blahhhhhh! I hate these things! If you want a good way to make your songs less meaningful, plug one of these bastards in! Thank God Greg's playing makes up for it and he's no slouch just because he uses a drum machine; Chris Hattingh was another good player I said the same thing about and Mark Schuster, so there's no taking sides!
"Wyrd" definately shows Greg's 25 years of guitar experience and I'd like to see him hire a drummer for the next one; it''ll be so much more aggressive and get the point across better but for the meantime, you may wonder like I did if this guy's fingers all have their own individual brain.
