Star & Key Of The Indian Ocean

Review of "Vintage Soup"

By: Phil Dirt

letter even noteworthy surf instros and five vocals live in peace and harmony on the new Star And Key Of The Indian Ocean CD. But seriously, folks, this is yet another fine release from one of surfdom's more original bands.

Picks: Camel Stomp, Crees, Fireballs, Cyclone, Nagasaki, Monkey Twist

"Nitro" ***
An infectious rhythm runs behind a melody that's period derivative. While it's cool in its own right, it's not as memorable as most Star And Key Of The Indian Ocean tracks. "Nitro" is not the Dick Dale anthem.
Surf Instrumental Stereo

"Camel Stomp" ****
"Camel Stomp" employs the classic surf structure and is quite infectious, with excellent arranging and energy. As you might guess from the title, it references Middle Eastern sounds and styles, while riding the waves squarely. Nice track.
Surf Instrumental Stereo

"Crees" *****
An Indian chant introduces one sultry and moody instrumental. "Crees" moves with rich moodiness through an Indian theme with very cool stereo muted rhythm guitars. I like this a lot.
Surf Instrumental Stereo

"Fireballs" *****
"Fireballs" is a rippin' surf instro with stylish double picking and energy. The bass slides in the transitions are very sultry, adding to the song's impact. It sticks with you.
Surf Instrumental Stereo

"Cyclone" ****
Tom toms rumble as the guitar leads you into a very fun surf romp. Drama, splash, and a sense of urgency add to the motion that "Cyclone" portrays.
Surf Instrumental Stereo

"Nagasaki" ****
Japanese themes and shimmering warbles make "Nagasaki" a unique instro among the many inspired by the Orient. It's an infectious and high spirited song that's friendly and tribal.
Surf Instrumental Stereo

"Monkey Twist" ****
Big energy and double picked guitar lines romp atop tribal tom toms and dark surf drama. "Monkey Twist" is a splashy song with an entertaining arrangement, especially the tom toms and the dribbling double picked verse.
