his "Vertical Invader" is a re-release of Masi's 1990 recording. Thanx to Lion Music this record is available once again for your listening pleasure. And listen you will. Most likely in awe too!
"Vertical Invader" is an instrumental record. And admittedly Masi's instrumental work generally impresses me more than his full band releases. This is largely due, to the fact that IMHO instrumental music stands the test of time a little better.
Still, the guitar sound, and even compositions kind of give away the aging of this 12 year old recording. But like I said, you *will* listen in awe, because Masi's talents stand undisputed. Most of what you hear is played by Alex Masi himself, with John Macaluso helping out on drums and Dave Sumner guest performing bass guitar on "Rock Of Changes".
Masi's own bass guitar playing is nothing to be ashamed of, though it's very functional. Perhaps a bit too much. Some virtuosity on the bass would have been a nice change of moods inbetween the arpeggio's, sweep picking and merciless riffs that come at you tune after tune. However, Masi cleverly explores fusion / funky stuff on songs like "Rhythm Workers". On this tune his bass playing is outstanding, and I love the Macaluso's use of ride and cymbals on this tune.
I am not sure to whom the "Ttribute to T. B". is. Tommy Bolin perhaps? I have no idea. If someone out there knows just holler and I'll correct it right away. Fact is, that it's an excellent tune!
One of my favorite songs on "Vertical Invader" however is "Finn", where Masi really draws up a wall of sound. Extensive use of reverb and delay, makes for a fog of guitar sound that offers a lot of great lead work to be discovered. Headphones recommended.
I like this record. I like most of Masi's work, but this one is really enjoyable. Clever songs, and some very melodic work by the man himself. Can not be left out of any Masi collection!
