Review of "Unplugged & Toothless"

By: Chris Long
uitarists Chris Hattingh and Jim Reindel return with a
fabulous acoustic follow-up to their amazing electric debut
from a couple of years ago. These are two incredibly talented guys and this
instrumental offering perfectly combines rockers and blues-based gems with Latin and
island flavored dittys.
This record is so good that it's kind of a shame that these
two truly brilliant players choose to present their music in
such a comedic way. For some reason they're totally hung
up on a "we're so old" trip. First of all, they really aren't that old and secondly,
who cares. I found myself cruising around town listening to this CD and really
digging certain tunes. Then, I'd look at the track listing on the case and discover
that the title was something ridiculous like "Hemhorroidal Tendencies" or "The
Metamucil Mambo." Personally I found it to be a real distraction from what's
otherwise a monstrous piece of work. Now I'll be the first to admit that in some of
my previous musical endeavors I was guilty of writing some really dopey stuff just
to get a laugh. However, as most people know, that was only because I have no
musical talent. These two guys, on the other hand, are really gifted players and
overall this record is a real treat for anyone who enjoys truly great guitar work.
