Genius By Virtuosity

Manchester, New Hampshire shredder Sifu Stephen Doe submitted his seven-song instrumental CD-R, Playing With Time,

a full-out assault on the fretboard. "I feel that it is truly an exhibition of genius by virtuosity," states Doe, who plays all the instruments on the album. A highly skilled axeman, Doe delivers incredibly fast lines alongside his backing tracks, which probably should be recorded by a full band, for maximum impact. He's got all the neo-classical and shred skills down pat, which are put to good use on tracks such as "Con-Fusion" and "Awakening", which feature some furious playing techniques. All that's needed here is production and arrangement help, and some like-minded, powerhouse musicians to contribute on the recording end of things - you should have a winner.

alb Lest you think sifu is just another ingredient in moo goo gai pan, Doe has been studying classical guitar, music theory, composition, advanced composition, jazz, blues, and rock, since he was 5 years old. For 5 years he played in a band named Wildside. While experimenting with various styles and beats, he found new inspiration. Doe discovered the magic of progressive/rock and instrumental music, and found he enjoys writing aggressive songs with a melodic flair. He plays drums, bass, and keyboards, out of a constant need to write and record. His "Trial" demo, recorded in 2003, consisted of 10 songs. Doe has built a strong blend across diverse musical styles, and prefers the challenge of off-tempo pieces with several key and instrumental transitions.

Doe's ultimate goal is to get signed by a label. He is looking to get his music on the radio a much as possible. He would also like to do as many live interviews and connect with as many fans as he can.

Oregon Meets Ocean

The CD-R Frank Goldwasser With The Alastair Greene Band is exactly that - a teaming of Portland-based bluesman Frank Goldwasser with Santa Barbara's own Alastair Greene in a thirteen track blues guitar summit. With the screams and yells on the high-octane instrumental opener, "55th Street Boogie", the band sets the tone for the entire album - take no prisoners, and deliver great blues music until someone passes out. When the wah-wah leads and funky rhythms of "I'm Gonna Wait", you'll be sure you've been sent to blues heaven, or at least the groovy waiting room. The two guitarists trade solos like their souls depended on who cuts who's head. Hey, and the rest of the album is equally as hot, so check out this combo, blues freaks.

pic When Frank Goldwasser was a child growing up in Paris, France, his parents had bought him a guitar. A classical acoustic model, he never found the time to learn how to play. But after being seduced by blues music, Frank began to work with the instrument. Attending blues concerts in Europe with his father, he met Sonny Rhodes and hung as close to him as possible, which led to Frank's first paying blues gig in 1981. He eventually migrated to the San Francisco area, and began sitting in with various house bands, until he hooked up with Troyce Key's band. This gave the young guitarist the chance to back artists such as Lowell Fulson, Jimmy McCracklin, Elvin Bishop and Percy Mayfield. Frank later formed the Paris Slim Band and kept gigging as much as possible. 1989 saw the debut of the first Paris Slim Band album, "Blues For Esther", while in 1998 Frank received the "Best Blues Guitarist Of The Year" award from the prestigious Trophees France Blues Association.

After moving to Portland, Oregon, Goldwasser has discovered a deep wealth of blues talent around the city. Collaborations with artists such as Alastair Greene are just some of the ways we'll be hearing a lot more of his voice, harp and guitar.
