Passionate Italian Neo-Classicist

Submitting his four-song demo CD-R is Italian guitarist Carlo A. Federici, a neo-classical instrumentalist who has put in the time with his instrument to be able to shred with all the familiar techniques found in the genre. The opening track, "Deep Ocean", features tons of sweeping and scorching solos, as does the second instrumental "Black Pearl", but not before beginning with clean guitar pyrotechnics in the vein of Marty Friedman's solo work. The third track, "Winds Of Hell" has a Black Sabbath vibe going for it, with Malmsteen-like leads, while "Venus" features harmonized lines, clean arpeggios, sound effects and keyboard violins. There are some issues with the demo - Federici recorded the tracks in his bedroom, so sound quality is poor. In addition, both "Deep Ocean" and "Winds Of Hell" have long, protracted intros that add nothing to the music, so Federici might be better served collaborating with other composers/engineers that also like the neo-classical style.

alb Carlo started playing guitar at the age of 10, and is completely self-taught. He listens to and learns from everything from classical to heavy metal - and everything in between. Carlo counts as his main musical influences such guitarists as Jason Becker, Yngwie Malmsteen and Eddie Van Halen, but also likes Brett Garsed, Uli Jon Roth, Joe Satriani and Steve Vai. Compositional influences include Malmsteen, Nightwish, Stratovarius, J.S. Bach and L.V. Beethoven, but Carlo also draws inspiration from atmospheric music such as Enigma and movie soundtracks. When recording his demo tracks, Carlo plays all the instruments (guitar, bass, keyboards) except for drums.

Federici is studying chemistry at the university, but states that music is his passion, his dream is to live his passion, and he is ready to drop his studies in order to realize his dream.

Flushing's Instrumental Rock

Guitarist Menachem Engel submitted his band Black House's instrumental demo CD-R entitled The No. 559, featuring primarily improvisational style rock. Engel likes to use a lot of effects on his guitar; for example, the delay pedal gets worn out on the opening track "Red Bubbles", while "Winterbreath" starts out with a sucking, swirling, hollowed out sound - with delay added. Tapped licks also make an appearance in "Winterbreath". "Ninetten" is the high-energy metal track that features some of the same rapid picking you'd hear on an Iron Maiden recording - 2:42 of soloing! "The Lot Six Experiments" will shatter cerebrums with double picking, grunge rhythms and all manner of reggaenation. What Black House needs is a composer to step up and organize all these riffs and solos into songs that stick with you - throwing three or four genres into a song may be fun, but it's ends up being more challenging for the listener. But if they keep at it, who knows what might happen?

pic Black House is basically four kids from Flushing, New York - ages ranging from 14 to 17 - playing instrumental metal, blues, rock, and other stuff. They sometimes have a fifth member for singing. Their influences include the following bands and artists: Metallica, Jimi Hendrix, RFS, Number 12 Looks Like You, Smashing Pumpkins, Slayer, Paul Simon, Meshuggah, Horizontal Orange, Dillinger Escape Plan, Beatles, Cypress Hill, Notorius BIG, Steve Vai, Robert Johnson, Deftones, Joe Satriani, Yngwie J. Malmsteen, and Bob Marley.

The band does not really play live now, and does not have any plans to. Their wall of sound can only be experienced on CD-R - for now.
