Smooth Voice, Smoking Chops
|
"Kathryn could be the love-child of Stevie Ray Vaughan and Eva Cassidy with her smoking chops, smooth voice and clever, true-to-life lyrics," a quotable quote describing Kathryn Grimm's work on her latest CD, Grimm Again. Geared towards blues enthusiasts, the ten tracks rip and snort with a blues passion and a rock attitude. You'll be drawn in by Grimm's voice as well as her guitar work, as tracks such as "Wishing Well" highlight both skills - in spades. The shuffle drive of "The Way I Feel" leaves space for some biting, signature licks - a favorite. The album's closer, "Birthday Blues" is an achingly melodic acoustic number sure to be enjoyed by Bonnie Raitt fans, among others. Keep the blues alive and sample Grimm Again by this California-based artist.
Kathryn was born and bred in Seattle, and inspired by her two older sisterıs record collections, she began singing and playing guitar at age 13. She was accepted into the University of Washingtonıs Musical Engineering program and began working part-time in a recording studio but before Kathryn could finish her degree, the University program was dissolved. Kathryn later settled in Hollywood, and enrolled in a one-year guitar trade school, an experience she calls ³a big waste of money.² Her real musical education came afterwards, when she began playing in a slew of bands. Kathryn replaced Rosie Flores as guitarist and songwriter for the notorious all-female ³Screaminı Sirens² (Restless Records), a country-punk band known for their heavy partying and crazy antics. In 2000, she graduated Cum Laude from California State University, Los Angeles, with a degree in Jazz Studies. Kathryn then released an eight song CD featuring original arrangements of her favorite standards titled, appropriately, ³Jazz According to Grimm², and then continued her education earning a Master's Degree in Commercial Music.
Aside from performing and recording, Grimm is also a published songwriter, an in-demand vocal and guitar instructor running her own teaching business in Hollywood, a freelance live and session vocalist/guitarist as well as an engineer/producer for hire.

A Touch & Feel To Kill For
|
Pretty accurately describing his music as Derek Trucks and Robben Ford meeting Allan Holdsworth or Bill Frisell, Los Angeles area guitarist Allen Hinds' new CD is entitled Fact Of The Matter, and is a virtually all instrumental, eleven track release. Hinds is a pro's pro; his music has such a great feel to it. On the jazzier side, a track like "Rain" shows off an advanced harmonic sense, while on the 'Fordian' side, "Some Of This" displays his slightly hotter and heavier, yet still melodically evocative guitar lines. For a blues/rock trip, get on the "Onramp" and delve into a bevy of slide licks and seductive, wah-wah fused guitar muscle. What's not to like here - well, nothing. Allen Hinds has done a great job with Fact Of The Matter; with an exciting and eclectic style, he'll quickly pick up plenty of new fans.
A native of Auburn, Alabama, Allen was exposed to blues and R&B at an early age. Moving into jazz and fusion in his teens, he attended Berklee College of Music and shortly after, moved to Los Angeles to attend Musicianıs Institute. He has performed and/or recorded with jazz and R&B luminaries including Patti Austin, Mary J. Blige, Maya, Natalie Cole, Roberta Flack, Vince Gill and many, many others. On staff at the Musicianıs Institute, Allen offers a musical blend of jazz, blues, and rock with a ³grassroots² style. Being an active studio musician as well as live performer, he has currently written songs for Larry Carlton, Patti Austin and Jeff Kashiwa, as well as the long running T.V. show on CBS - "JAG². His contributions were also heard on the ³EFX² network this season. Using a variety of vintage guitars and amps, his main gear is a 59 ³historic² Gibson Les Paul, a 1962 Gibson SG, a ³67 Telecaster, a ³61 Les Paul Special and a ı62 Gibson 345.
Hinds' endorsements include Ernie Ball, Brian Moore guitars, Line 6, Bogner, B-Band, Xotic pedals, Xotic effects, and Gibson. He is hoping to find distribution or better, and would love to tour and 'do his own thing'.
