Acoustic Guitar WIth Orchestrations
|
This Grey Cloud is the name of the new CD by North Carolina guitarist and musician Steve Fulk, who supplements his collection of instrumental and vocal acoustic guitar works with lush, synth-driven orchestrations. In fact, for the most part, the melodic themes are heard through the keyboard parts, with the guitar serving as a rhythmic and chordal (frequently finger picked) backdrop. Exceptions would songs such as the primarily guitar instrumental "Une Nuit Blanche", and the closer, "When Dreams Sleep". The instrumentals seem to work better than the other numbers, as the vocals are not strong as they could be, and also seem be somewhat buried in the mix. No crazy solos or wild fingerpicking here, just atmospheric numbers designed to make you think.
Born in North Carolina, Steve now resides in a small community 25 minutes outside of Raleigh. Stevešs musical endeavors began as just a fun activity. Writing poetry at a young age and learning to write songs later on, labeled Steve as ŗimaginative˛ by his peers and teachers. It wasnšt until a friend showed him a few guitar chords that he would consider writing a lot more of his works to song. Steve would later play with many local musicians in side projects and bands. Learning music along the way, trading guitar licks and songwriting skills - all strengthened Stevešs musicianship. Steve learned from the singer/songwriters of the late 60šs and 70šs - musicians like Tim Buckley, Harry Chapin and Cat Stevens, just to name a few.
Fulk is currently the owner of Spinning Gold Productions, composing music for film scores, commercial jingles and business audio. As far as This Grey Cloud, one dollar from each sale will go to the North Carolina Chapter of the Wildlife Conservancy.

Jazz With Blues-Drenched Phrasing
|
Or is it blues with jazz-drenched phrasing? You be the judge when you listen to Richie Hart's new trio project Blues In The Alley. The CD, which features Hart's guitar with bassist Rick Petrone, drummer Joe Corsello, and special guests Pete Levin (keyboards) and Gerry Niewood (sax), offers jazz/blues instrumentals which cook ("The Fox", "Blues In The Alley") and smolder ("Black Pearls", the classic "Autumn Leaves").. Hart's a solid writer too, as evidenced on originals such as "Fresh Air", "On A High Note", and the aforementioned "Blues In The Alley". An interesting closing track is his "West Side Story Medley", a quick-hitter at three minutes that succinctly displays his abilities in a solo guitar setting - nice!
Richie has been performing and teaching jazz for over 35 years. He has a bacheloršs degree from Berklee College of Music and a Masteršs Degree from Lehman College. He is presently an Associate Professor of Jazz Guitar at Berklee College of Music. Richie has performed and/or recorded with some of the biggest names in jazz including Ron Carter, Jimmy Cobb, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Jack McDuff, Don Patterson, Harold Ousley, Houston Person and Etta Jones, Hubert Laws, Freddie Hubbard, Danny Stiles, Phil Wilson, and Herb Pomeroy, Roy Hargrove, Lany Willis, Guillermo Franco and Roberta Gambarini, to name a few. The Richie Hart Trio has performed in jazz clubs including the Regatta Bar, Boston, The Blue Note, NYC, the 63rd Street Steak House, NYC as well as at festivals including the Berkshire Jazz Festival.
Hart is a clinician for Guild Guitars and strings and in addition to his position at Berklee, he is currently performing with his trio.
