Soliciting Progressive Instrumental Fans
|
Unsolicited Material is almost a solid hour of progressive rock from a Canadian group called The Dayjob Orchestra. Intensely guitar heavy, the music has an aggressive, live-in-the-studio feel, where core members Peter Swann (guitar), Michael Thorne (drums) and Chris Robertson (bass) toss out virtuosic musical performances up, down and over the fifteen, mostly instrumental tracks. "Madness" opens the CD with shattering bursts of notes and percussion, laying the groundwork for the musical overload to follow. "Deal With It" opens with the most famous expletive in the English language shouted over a baby's cries (you read that right), then lays out funky rhythms and head-snapping riffs. "Planetarium" offers some of the more melodic material to be heard from this band, whose CD is bound to be a favorite with listeners who value over-the-top musicianship.
Guitarist Peter Swann is one of the most talented musicians in the Toronto area. A songwriter, engineer and producer, as well as being an amazing player, have made him quite "in demand". His vast musical talent is surpassed only by his devotion to it. Peter's claim to fame is that, also being a guitar teacher, taught Adrian Lifeson, son of Rush's Alex Lifeson, the ways of the axe.
The Dayjob Orchestra wants to share their music with as many musicians as possible (their CD has been described by many as 'music for musicians'), and is planning a European tour sometime next year.

A Flair For Phrasing
|
New York guitarist Jim Savitt is making noise in contemporary jazz/smooth jazz circles with his CD Hear And Now. He's garnered quite a bit of airplay with his melodic, guitar-driven instrumentals - a welcome respite from the slew of saxophone dominated contemporary jazz cuts. Savitt is an ultra-clean player, playing both electric and acoustic guitars with equal skill, and adding seamless, double-tracked harmony to enhance his original, world-influenced melodies. Hear And Now is a perfect CD for winding down at the end of a long day - Savitt's fluid phrasing making for a special listening experience. Fans of Craig Chaquico's work, who'd like a little more electric guitar in the mix, should really give Savitt's CD some ear time.
Jim studied at the Berklee School of Music and has a bachelor of science degree from Stevens Institute of Technology, where for two years he was the musical director of their 17 piece jazz band. He has performed in numerous venues ranging from clubs and restaurants to festivals and trade show events at large convention centers. Jim was interviewed and performed live to an audience of 4.5 million nationwide listeners on the WOR Radio Network's Joey Reynolds Show. In addition, he has performed internationally including a 2 week stint in Cairo, Egypt in both 1999 and 2000. Jim was a 2002 headline performer at the WJZA 103.5/104.3 concert series in Columbus, OH.
With 20 years of experience in musical theory and performance, and an expertise in computer technology, Savitt constantly seeks out new venues to express his musicality. He recently produced & co-wrote a New Age style CD for the group "Leaving Footprints" and wrote and produced the Chill/House CD entitled "Chillin' Nights" for the group Manhattan Project. Jim was also commissioned to compose music for Any Channel, an interactive entertainment company developing
a video game for a multi-player CD-ROM machine.
