Adept At Rock, Blues, Metal, Funk & More

All the way from Ontario, Canada comes guitarist Lorne Hind, who submitted a four song (really song snippets) demo CD-R entitled Spoiled. Designed to display Hind's mixed bag of musical influences, such as rock, blues, metal, funk, shred and reggae dance, the songs all groove hard, and showcase his liquid soloing style. Nice! Funky "007 Rock 1" has a serious bass, mixed just the way is should be, that clears the way for passionate, melodious guitar lines. "Reggae Rock" takes the listener 'just off' the island, as rock meets reggae - with rock winning the battle due to Hind's effortless, overdriven fretwork. The production on the demo is rough in spots, with an on-again, off-again amp buzz and the song snippets ending rather abruptly, but as an example of what Hind can do with a guitar (sort of a musical business card), it suits the purpose just fine.

alb Lorne target his original music for movie themes. He loves to shred, but in a melodic manner whenever possible. Whatever the song requires, Lorne strives to fit in the best choice of notes. Long term, he would like to bring a new sound and style to the instrumental guitar world, and feels his current demo is taking him in that direction.

Hind's future plans include perhaps owning a studio, doing session work, writing songs and scores for movie soundtracks, and penning tunes for well-known bands. He would also love to put together a three-piece band to spotlight his instrumental guitar work.

Slovenia's Instrumental Rock Future

Mowers Of August is Slovenian guitarist Jernej Zoran's demo CD-R, filled with instrumental rock visions and serving as a great introduction to this talented European. He plays a Fender Stratocaster left-handed, and employs a number of effects and tones to give his music a nice dynamic. A track such as "Adrenalin In My Blood" will use a host of tones to set moods from introspective to outgoing. The opening track, "The Spiral" starts out soft and, like a good movie soundtrack piece, builds energy with aggressive guitar work before returning to the opening motif. "The Parachutist" is an exercise in funk, as the guitarist spews super-tough blues riffs all over the track with effortless flair. Zoran handles all the bass and drum programming on the demo as well - here we have an exciting and versatile guitar player who is dedicated to the instrumental form.

pic Jernej is 28 years old and has been playing the guitar for fourteen years. Taught a few chords by his brother, seeing the U2 film "Rattle And Hum" prompted him to get serious about the guitar. His first band was called Minister Gregor, which lasted until 1991. Jernej has been heavily influenced by the playing styles of Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Joe Satriani, Jeff Beck, Stevie Ray Vaughan - not to mention Dave Gilmour of Pink Floyd. After a short stint with the commercially-oriented band Kaja (1991-1992) he joined a local band called Madzars. Later, a reformed Minister Gregor was renamed the Jernej Zoran Trio. The same year Jernej joined a rockabilly line-up from Ljubljana called Lucky Cupids. From 1998 to 1999 he was also a member of Tunke, the band from the Posavje region.

Zoran continues to work with the Jernej Zoran Trio, an instrumental outfit that serves as his primary vehicle of musical self-expression. He is currently seeking a publisher for his original music.
