Guitar Solo Album In The Works For 1999
|
The Byron Nemeth Group, led by guitarist Byron Nemeth, comes rocketing out of Cleveland with their brand of progressive rock influenced instrumental music. The band submitted a demo CD-R of five original tunes, which are being shopped around in anticipation of Nemeth's full-length solo album. Shades of heavy Kansas and Yes can be noticed in the music, especially "Explorer Suite", which would be at home on the Kansas "Masque" album. Nemeth plays guitar from the gut (check out the shred solo on "Ancient Evenings"), his riffs and solos often offering counterpoint to the electric violin lines contributed by Nathen Tulenson. Rounding out the group is a solid rhythm team of Michael Nelson on drums and Daniel Desantis on bass guitar.
Born In Quito, Equador, Byron came to the USA at a young age and began playing guitar in various established rock bands. He has studied jazz and classical guitar at Cleveland State University with respected teachers Bob Frasier, Richard Bachman and Rich Holdsworth. Byron also teaches guitar, and has a wide range of of guitar students of various styles and ages. He played guitar at eight performances in the 1997 Oct./Nov. season with the Cleveland Chamber Orchestra in the Cleveland Ballet rock opera "Ozone Hour".
Nemeth will release in 1999 his long awaited guitar solo album. In the style of Jeff Beck/Steve Vai/Joe Satriani, Nemeth will deliver material that encompasses new guitar directions of heavy rock impressions and light jazz shades.

Acoustic Guitar With An Edge
|
On The Mesa is the creative output of Canadian guitarist and composer Rob Bartlett. The CD is an acoustic tour-de-force, featuring instruments such as acoustic guitar, diggery doo, mountain dulcimer, harmonica, steel guitar, bagpipes, cello, drums, wood flute, congas, shakers and more. A few electric instruments sneak into the mixes as well (bass, guitar and synthesizers), but the focus is on the acoustic, and the cinematic nature of the compositions is guaranteed to take the listener to another place. It's especially fine to listen to the music through headphones; Bartlett mixed the album 'wide' in order to offer a spatial experience. Bartlett's guitar doesn't dominate the music, however it is evident his playing is marked by an absense of cliches, and the instrument is beautifully recorded.
Rob describes the music comprising On The Mesa, I've had this recording in my head for a long time. It took forever, but it's finally complete. Best case, it sounds like a soundtrack to a badlands documentary. Worst case, a Spaghetti Western. I'd hate to call it psychedelic country, it's more like a strange mix of ancient and modern instruments from the Diggery Doo to the Fender Stratocaster. Sort of "new age with an edge." A musical journey for the armchair traveller."
Bartlett is well on his way to establishing a unique and interesting sound all his own. His creativity and desire to push acoustic instruments into new areas compliments the listenability of the compositions and should lead to more powerful works.
