Instrumental Guitar Landscapes

Landscapes Of Life, on Lonesome Owl Music, is guitarist Gary Kuhstoss' latest cassette release, featuring five compositions that epitomize instrumental guitar music: fiery electric guitar lines, dark, sweet acoustic work and compelling melodic concepts. Kuhstoss, based in Lindenhurst, Illinois, points to various influences, such as Al Di Meola and Uli Jon Roth, as inspirations for the musical approach he has taken on Landscapes Of Life. With the attitude of a true musician, Kuhstoss strives to create his own personal style of playing--but with due respect and thanks to the guitarists that have inspired him. It's clear Kuhstoss only needs to continue to write and record to reach his full potential as an artist.

alb Initially spurred on by the music of Styx, Triumph and Rush, Gary took up the guitar at age fourteen. In high school he explored heavier material, such as Scorpions, Michael Schenker and Queensryche, and felt himself being drawn to music with great guitar players. Gary gained more confidence in his abilities while attending college, and discovered the virtuosity of the Shrapnel guitarists, as well as Di Meola and Roth. In 1990, Gary began playing guitar for contemporary Christian group, and averaged thirty live gigs a year from 1990 to 1993. The desire to write and record his own brand of music led to the creation of Landscapes Of Life.

Kuhstoss is currently working on a new CD, which is slated for release in 1998. He maintains a web site that has samples of his new music in progress, as well as music from his first tape, "Musical Tapestries."

Alternative Acoustic With A Pure, Emotional Edginess

Canadian-born singer/songwriter/guitarist Mimi Cross is currently distributing a wonderful cassette release, ironically entitled Demos. The music on Demos, while sparsely arranged with mainly voice and acoustic guitar, is far and away better than demo-quality material. The recording is clean and bright, and captures the edgy essence of the folk/pop/rock songwriting. Cross flavors her songs with jazz-tinged rhythm guitar work and pop hooks that enhance the emotional quality of her vocals. Demos is the opening statement of a immensely talented artist with a potentially huge future.

pic Born Mimi Aufderhar Cross, Mimi has been trained in classical music and has also studied jazz. She began performing several years ago in Asbury Park, New Jersey, sharing the bill with national acts such as Chris Whitley and Kristen Hall. From her home base just outside of New York City, Mimi currently plays live in clubs in the tri-state area, including the Manhattan clubs Hotel Galvez Mercury Lounge and the Bitter End. Her provocative work defies easy categorization, having been described as "left of folk, with an occasional pop hook."

Cross is now planning to record a full-length CD of her latest material in late 1997 or early 1998. The nine songs on Demos indicate that the possibility of future releases from this artist are sure to be met with excitement and anticipation.
