High Energy Band Does It Themselves

The title of their CD, Fast & Cheap, accurately describes the circumstances under which guitarist Tommy Dean and his band High Risk (Dean Peterson, bass; Tim Karbowski, drums) had to record. Recorded "live in the studio" in three days, the record was also completely self-produced and self-financed by the band members. Fast & Cheap features driving, rhythmically powerful music using straightforward guitar-bass-drum arrangements. The CD includes a rockin' cover version of Blondies' "One Way Or Another", but guitarists will find most enjoyable a live, nine-minute instrumental arrangement/improv over the Henri Mancini "Pink Panther" theme called "Pink/Peter". Guitar-heavy and blistering, the song also quotes from "Peter Gunn", "Purple Haze" and "Yankee Doodle Dandy!"

alb High Risk regards themselves as the quintessential "Do It Yourself" 90's rock band. Formed in November, 1990, the band played its first gig on December 1st of that same year. They have since performed over 700 gigs, more than once doing two shows in two different cities on the same day. After securing a slot on the main stage at Rock Fest '96, the band decided to incorporate original material into their set. Encouraged by the positive response, High Risk began making plans to record their first CD. They combined elements of alternative/grunge, punk and metal into the songs that make up Fast & Cheap.

High Risk is striving to create music with melody and hooks in the forefront, along with writing lyrics that run the gamut from humorous to deadly serious, delivered with attitude and passion. With their debut CD, they've taken a mighty first step towards their goal.

One Of Those (Guitar) Guys

Brian Donnelly is a guitarist and songwriter from Atlanta, Georgia, who has taken his love and dedication to guitar music and an acoustic guitar and released One Of Those Guys, a CD of jazz standards reinterpreted using new guitar techniques developed by Donnelly. The fifteen-track CD also contains six Donnelly originals, that range from the bluesy ("Moko Jumbies") to the evocative and wistful ("Marf"). Many of the songs on One Of Those Guys suggest Al Di Meola as a jazzy reference point; imagine Di Meola after ten cups of coffee! The tempos and lightning-quick runs are dizzying at times, as Donnelly imparts several classical approaches to his interpretations.

pic Brian has taken his study of classical guitar, Charlie Parker and Al Di Meola and created an original style of playing that uses the songs to show the beauty and versatility of the guitar. Brian believes that the music should be "in your face" with no distracting effects that detract from the songs. His use of an unprocessed acoustic guitar on One Of Those Guys allows him to convey the essence of the music and advance the idea that one only needs a guitar to create a whole world of fabulous sounds.

Donnelly finds that his music can be difficult to categorize because the common thread running through his music is not based upon style, rather a great love and appreciation of fine guitar music. Each song selected for inclusion on One Of Those Guys was chosen because it had something specific and special Donnelly wanted to say.
