Review of "Under A Watchful Eye"
|
By: Matt Coyte
arren Wilson is a player from SA with a huge amount of talent. He is a player that ignores trends and fly by night shifts in attitude, instead focusing on expanding his range as a great solo guitarist. As you'll hear on "Mission Complete" (this track was included on the CD which comes with the magazine), Darren uses fast, technical runs as much as he does soulful and emotive soloing. His playing tips it's hat towards technical players like Steve Vai and Yngwie Malmsteen, while retaining a close reign on song structure and never straying into self flagellation.
"Under A Watchful Eye" was recorded from 96-98 entirely on 4 track cassette. While the sound quality isn't as crystal clear as a studio recording, it is definently a darn sight better than a lot of major CDs that are released. "Mission Complete" is Darren's favourite track on the EP and I agree, although it is closely followed by the title track in my book.
