his is probably the first solo guitarist that i've heard that has released an album independently. Darren Wilson who hails from South Australia can boast of his achievement in recording the entire album on a 4 track- tracker... a commendable effort, and the sound quality is pretty fair too though it could still sound better. The pieces on this release have been written and recorded over a period of two years (96-98) which is a fairly long time considering the fact that there are only six tracks on the CD.
The music on this release are light, new age tunes with tinges of blues and rock. Very relaxing background sort of music, it is generally for easy listening. Basically, solos are played as accompaniments to the bass rhythmic lines and riffs so you don't get a very conspicuous melody, which is why this release does take a little bit of time to listen.
Overall I really dig the softer, slower likes of "Windows", "State Of Illusion" and "Vision Splendid" -- beautiful pieces that mix new age music with a little bit of rock. The melodies are great soothers and Darren's fluid guitar playing is very evident here. I would have liked to listen to more of these.
The rest of the tracks "Mission Complete", "Mystery" and "Under A Watchful Eye" are mostly the standard rock/blues fare, though they do provide the opportunity for Darren to exhibit some laudable technicality. So if you are an avid guitar music collector or fan, then this release may prove an interesting listen.
