teve Vai has come up with what may be the most interesting and mature disc of his varied career. The Ultra Zone contains plenty of trademark Vai-isms (on the title track, among others) but it is the overall strength of the material combined with the fine support from Gregg Bissonette, Mike Magini, Mike Keneally among others that makes this disc stand out. The instrumental "Oooo" is a Vai tour de force of wackiness and eerie otherworldly beauty while the Stevie Ray Vaughan inspired "Jiboom" is an unusual Vai blues. Recommended.
