Review of "Twins"

By: Howard Hart

letter ere at HHGI we receive a lot of packages from guitarists each week, and to be honest - most of these players deliver the goods. In fact, there are more wonderful guitarists out there than we can possibly get to; but we keep on trying none-the-less.

Having said that - it's always great to have some high-quality acoustic stuff come through the door, I'm a sucker for it, I admit it. Sooo, anyis - I receive this package from Gilbert Isbin containing his CD "Twins", which was recorded with Geert Verbeke, who plays Bells, Berimbau, Himalayan Bowls... you get the idea. This is very mood derived music - emotionally stirring, and adventurous. For instance, on "Saskia Maya" the listener is tossed into an audio landscape of sorts where the ears aren't sure where they're going to be taken - Will it resolve?, will it become more intense? - None of the above happens. Instead, you either go along for the ride or jump ship. It's a bit like listening to beautiful acoustic music written by Ligeti or Penderecki!

This is not a CD that you listen to lightly... It's probably pretty safe to say that if you're not familiar with the music of guys like Varese, maybe Bartok, and a few others - you might not get into this. On the other hand, if you have adventurous ears and love discovering new musical possibilities; this may be the CD for you. Add to this that Isbin's playing is nothing short of beautiful AND full of personality, and you've got a great listening experience. There is something very intimate and honest about the way he delivers his musical vision.
