Review of "The Master Plan"
|
hris Brooks is probably the best guitarist you've never heard of, but if the material on "The Master Plan" is any indication, it may only be a matter of time before this Sydney-based guitarist becomes a known entity in the international guitar scene. Armed with devastating technique, melodic sensibility and a high command of phrasing, Brooks shows us that shred is not dead - it just got smarter.
Stunning guitar work is on display on the equally impressive 10 instrumental songs, which consist of progressive metal excursions, rock-fusion outings, and laid back melodic passages. Brooks occasionally tips his hat to the music of Dream Theater and Steve Vai, but has a compositional and instrumental style original enough to keep him far out of clone territory. Highlights include the powerful opener Kryptica, ballad-turn-funk jam Blue Sky Odyssey, and prog-rock monsters "The Master Plan" and "Crack In The Hourglass". Brooks excels at taking the listener on a journey, and it's a ride well worth the price of admission.
Produced and performed by Brooks on all instruments, The Master Plan marks the emergence of an exciting musician and composer.
