he Netherlands, even though can't be called as homeland of virtuosi, is coming to
light as a country of very-talented guitarists. Aside from Marcel Coenen and Joop
Wolters, Elewout de Raad is trying to get his head out of the sand. He represents a
style described as jazz-rock or jazz/fusion. I'd like to point out that there are
two sides of mentioned genre: the more complex kind (so the harder one in
reception), and the second one, favoured by a Dutchman - with distinctly marked
melodic lines. Although his compositions are long and complicated, we can commune
with subtle tunes, played on the highest artistic level and served in accessible
form. It turned out that practical and theoretical expertise, passed on by Teije
Wijnterp and Eef Albers to Elewout, hadn't fallen on deaf ears, because with "The
Cross" he managed to refer directly to fusion classics like Allan Holdsworth, Frank
Gambale and Scott Henderson.
