Review of "The Cross"
|
By: Mr. Mergim
lewout de Raad is a jazz-rock guitarist who is assisted by a bass player
(Jorrit Godeke) and a drummer (Hendrik Mulder) to deliver an album of great quality.
Though Elewout is an unknown guitarist, his art can be measured with that of Jeff
Beck or Allan Holdsworth! The absence of keyboard and the limited formation of a
trio poses issues, some could accuse this of a too great simplicity. But the choice
of such a setting reveals all the weaknesses and qualities of a musician who is in
position of exclusive soloist. Elewout thus expresses all his sensitivity and
multiple melodic variations of his talent. This could be tedious just like numerous albums of this type but the
variations are incredibly rich and avoid causing the music to be dull at any moment,
because of that the 38 minute CD appears quite short! There are quite some progressive influences to be heard on this CD, however toappeal to a wider public it would be nice to add a keyboard player on his next album.
