Two prime objectives motivated the creation of Ken Hatfield's 2005 CD, String Theory. First, he wanted to delve deeper into the nexus between improvisation and composition that he began to examine on his CD "Explorations For Solo Guitar". And second, he felt compelled to undertake an emotional journey to reclaim aspects of his cultural heritage that as a jazz musician he had spent a lot of energy trying to distance himself from, namely, his Appalachian roots. Two of the compositions ("Borges & I" and "Snowhill Variations") are solo guitar pieces and the other two are duets with guitar and dobro, and guitar and mandolin. Each of the four multi-movement works that make up String Theory were structured so that any single movement could stand on its own, but when heard within the context of the entirety of its surrounding movements, each movement illuminates its neighbors.
