Review of "Smiles To Go"
|
n this, his fourth recording, guitarist Jim Earp finds that elusive balance between technique and melody. He's got the chops to play it fast and fancy, but he never lets technique get in the way of his sweet and compelling melodies. Earp incorporates a number of influences into his music, like traditional Celtic, jazz, and Latin, and boils it down to one unified vision. His playing is clean and precise, powerful and expressive one minute, tasteful and restrained the next. The 15 tunes run the range of emotions from gentle and introspective to brash and expansive. As in all the best guitar recording, this one works on many different levels.
