he new CD from the man who could very well be the world's greatest underground guitar player. "Sketches From The Thought Chamber", is now available. Michael Harris is not just another technically gifted, over the top player. He oozes with musicality and an uncanny sense of melody and counterpoint.
The man can play anything from a stylistic point of view, while at the same time injecting his own sense of virtuosity. Michael is a guitar master of huge proportions. There are very few guitarists alive today who can go note for note with this musical genius.
On "Sketches...", Mr. Harris holds nothing back, that is what is so refreshing about this CD; it's an honest outporing of Michael's soul as interpreted through his compositions. You can almost feel his thoughts as he blazes through passages of intricate fretwork. Some of the tracks have a sinister flavor while others sound exotic.
A number of the tracks feature Michael's brother Brian on drums. He is an accomplished musician in his own right, providing some awesome double bass drumming. The drums are huge on this CD, I mean huge! Gotta love that.
The other musicians that join Mr. Harris on this tour de force of a CD include Mike Haids - drums, Matt Thompson - drums, and Adam Nittis - bass.
The lead track "Prognosis" is a very strong opener for the CD with some really cool prog influences and a nice hint of jazz (yes, jazz!). The jazz influenced pasages in this song are what really make it shine - Harris has this uncanny ability to go from full on prog to jazz to metal to... you get the picture - no boundries! The whole CD is a masterpiece, no weak songs here folks. "Neuro-transmitter" is a nice neo-classical piece with some bizarre twists. "Voyage of Xyrethius" sounds like film score material (a very nice musical statement, awesome guitar playing). This entire offering is top notch from the standpoint of both the compositions and the production. Even the art work for the cover and inserts is world class.
Get this CD - Micheal Harris is a player who has developed a maturity that goes beyond virtuoso, beyond master of the instrument, he has no limitations. This is a serious musical statement from a seriously talented musician.
