Review of "Sing"
|
By: John Nicholas
eil Zaza is a Cleveland guitarists who has made a lot waves with his independent instrumental CDs. His CD "Sing" is a great rock instrumental with a lot of energy and melody. Neil strikes a perfect balance between songwriting and guitar pyrotechnics and works in a lot of different guitar sounds. The opening tracks, "Everything I Should Have Said..." and a cover of the 70s song "Crazy Love" are blues rock tracks with a good use of rhythm textures and soulful playing. "I'm Alright", one of my favorites on this CD, kicks in a more modern rock feel in the mode of Andy Timmons or Satriani. All the songs have creative melodies and show Neil's skill in arranging and layering guitar parts, something that I wish more instrumentals concentrated on. His rendition of "Amazing Grace" is very creative and also features some the best soloing on the CD.
