eading from Louisville, USA, Nick Borho released his first solo album.
Nick had an unique idea to record this album and preferred his bathroom
and living room to be a recording studio. Sometimes Nick recorded with
the windows open and was surrounded by the sounds of crickets, rain
and other noises. The reason for this was that Nick wanted a live sound
just if he was playing in your living room or at a stage. Nick touches on
different styles through the album, including blues, Hawaiian, Slack-key,
classical and bluegrass. Although Nick recorded in odd places the sound,
is excellent. Impressive pieces are Brownsboro Rd., Highland Stomp and
Wings of Locust in which you hear the sound of perhaps a steaming train
in the background and this gives his music an extra dimension, which is
not distracting from the music at all as one might expect. Nick's technique
sometimes is a bit unorthodox and the timing sounds sometimes unfamiliar
and very staccato and unbalanced. Using a lot of overtones is a technique
he uses often as on Kat's Song. Dive In is up tempo and perhaps illustrates
the hurry on a crowded street. Raindrops has this three dimensional effect
of rain and crickets being part of the composition. Nick illustrates that daily
sounds can tribute to compositions that vary from slow to fast and energetic.
