hat becomes immediately apparent when listening to this disc is that Igor Belsky can flat-out play the guitar. The man truly shreds. As long as Vai and Satch are getting major-label support, so should Belsky. There are a couple of Satriani-style tracks on here, but they aren't direct rip-offs. It's more like Belsky is paying homage to the guitar god. Belsky's also got a bit of the experimentalist in him, much like Vai and Satch. At times, his tone sounds very Eric Johnson-influenced, and his speedy solos are often Malmsteen-esque (although his overall style is not overtly neo-classical). Basically, Belsky's got some of the best elements of these axe-masters rolled into one six-stringed package! And his playing is fast and clean, and has feeling - a tough combination for many guitarists to achieve.
Recommended listening: Check out the speed-picking in "Space Marathon". Notice the judicious use of just the right amount of distortion in "Adrenalin Junkie" (not to mention the absolutely sick soloing). Enjoy the Satriani-like (or is it Vai-like? Hmmm...) hooks of "Eastern Flier." Feel the sexy "If I Have To Lose You" tug at your heart as Belsky pours out soulful guitar note after soulful guitar note - I get chills listening to this song! Check out the awesome layering of guitar tracks in "Last Dance." There's a lot here to enjoy, and the production is well-done, so your ears won't get tired listening to this Indie release!
Igor Belsky chose the perfect name for this CD - "Road Tested" - because he plays with the poise and skill of a seasoned veteran. Maybe someday major record labels will start signing talented musicians again, and Belsky will get his rightful turn in the spotlight. In the meantime, get "Road Tested"!
