utside the big new CDs put out by the major media outlets, here is a small summer surprise which is well worth tracking down.
"Reunion of Souls" was inspired by a 1997 master class with the guitarist Jim Hall attended by the two young apprentices, Sheryl Bailey and Chris Bergson - who are products of the two great schools, Berklee College of Music and Oberlin College. It was musical love at first sight - under the eyes, ears and fingers of the benevolent master. The two lovers undertook to transform the musical love story into a loft story whose end product is none other than this remarkable little offering, with it's transformation from a duo to a quartet, which swings to it's heart's desire. In seven compositions of their own and two standards, one of which is the lovely Rogers and Hart piece, "There's A Small Hotel" - cleverly arranged by Chris Bergson, the quartet shares a fine musical maturity and teaches an impressive lesson in real creativity. Possesor of a real group sound - a rare quality! It falls in the tradition of open jazz or groove - blues and melody are in good company with the most risky improvisations.
Totally at ease in Jim Hall's world, the two guitarists nevertheless manage to separate themselves from it. Accompanied by a watchful rhythm section, the two guitarists, playing tightly from beginning to end deliver music as elegant as it is inspired.
Translated to English by Judith Bergson.
