Latin/Flamenco Based Music Marks Debut

Mark Ripoll's debut solo CD, Esperando, displays a heavy Cuban/Latin/Spanish flavor throughout, as the ten tracks contain examples of gripping acoustic Flamenco playing ("Esperando", "Nuevo Flamenco") spiced with some fiery electric Latin playing ("Mamboleo"). "Nuestra Cancion" even features a nice blend of acoustic and wah-wah electric leads. While primarily acoustic and about half instrumental, the CD does feature vocal contributions on some tracks (in Spanish, keeping with the flavor of the album). Ripoll's guitar is the star and focus of the CD however, riveting the listener with piping hot playing, which is reminiscent of some of Al DiMeola's Latin/jazz acoustic work. If you like Latin rhythms and are into discovering new talent, pick up a copy of Esperando, you won't be disappointed. Mark Ripoll was originally profiled in the February-March, 2001 edition of The Undiscovered.

alb Michael first became immersed in the musical sounds of rock greats such as Eddie Van Halen and Joe Satriani, and dedicated himself to becoming an accomplished guitar player. A native of Long Island, New York, he relocated to South Florida to study jazz and classical music. At age 17, Michael began his professional career playing in the venues of Key West , Palm Beach, and others. At that point, he began to include his Cuban roots in his playing, and quickly unleashed a passion for Flamenco guitar. Soon after can Steven's debut album, Esperando.

Ripoll, who is currently residing in Nashville, is pursuing his solo career while playing and recording with artists, such as Kirk Whalum, Everette Harp, Mark Antoine and many more.

Personal Blues Sound Attracts Attention

A bluesman worth discovering, Bobby Manriquez is circulating his CD-R of original blues/rock music entitled Another Shade Of Blue(s). If the playing on tracks such as "G-Blue" and "The Boogie Man's Comin'" doesn't rip your head off, the incendiary instrumental live track "Smokehouse" can always do the trick. Manriquez definitely brings an original approach to the blues, whipping out explosive leads where required and always filling in with tasty funk, soulful rhythm, or dirty riffage. Manriquez is no slouch behind the microphone either, as most tracks feature his been-there-and-back vocal style. Another Shade Of Blue(s) also features him on a number of other instruments, such as piano, bass, keyboards, congas and more. Do yourself a favor and track down Manriquez' recording if you want some original blues you can use.Bobby Manriquez was originally profiled in the February-March, 2001 edition of The Undiscovered.

pic In the early '70s you could find Bobby sharing lead guitar duties in a prominent D.C. based band, climaxing in the A&M Records release of "Daddy's Girl" in 1976. He has also toured with Capitol Records artist Kathi McDonald, as well as guitarist/songwriter Nils Lofgren. The unforgettable TV appearance of the London BBC recording of the "Old Grey Whistle Test" was later released by Nils Lofgren on a 1993 CD of the same name. After a ten-year hiatus, Bobby came back on the scene as lead guitarist for soul legend Wilson Pickett, which led to shows both in the US and abroad.

Manriquez later put together a demo in 1999 and received such a consistently good reaction, that he decided to add tracks to what would become Another Shade Of Blue(s).
