Review of "Psycho Acoustic Overture"
|
By: Doug Silver
n a world where there seems to be a guitar shredder around every corner, what do you make of a guy who brings into battle against orchestra, vocal elements, and a rock band only a Nylon-string Axe? The results are symphonic and progressive with goth and neo-classical elements splattered around.
This recording is filled with serious compositions, scored and performed in a serious manner. I will pass on walking through the various songs - each has highlights and delights a-plenty. But in order to give you some perspective on this music, if you are a fan of brilliant guitar playing I think you will find that every song will impress you. If you like the classical touch to prog music (i.e. Renaissance) you will find things many things to like. If you like the colorful neo-classical/goth sounds of Within Temptation or After Forever, you will find many elements of that here. If you are a Pink Floyd fan - then Walburgis Night is going to send you soaring with pleasure. Many of the lightning runs Steidl delivers on the nylon-strings of his guitar make me think of Al DiMeola's damped string excursions. On Metaphorphoses I will add Mahavishnu John to the sounds I am reminded of. There are parts of Papillion that are so fast, that they sound like water running!
In spite of my references to other artists and sounds, Pysco Acoustic Overture is a totally original album which I can recommend without reservations. Albums like this one are the reason I love prog.
