he diverse sound scapes found throughout Promised Land provide us with a glimpse into the musical mind of one of today's greatest keyboard players - Vitalij Kuprij (Artension, Ring of Fire). Promised Land is an outstanding all instrumental collaboration between Kuprij and guitarists Marco Ferrigno and Javier Leal. Other musicians featured on the CD include Bass player extraordinaire Philip Bynoe and drummer Jon Doman.
The CD is packed with some of the finest and widely diverse fusion/prog keyboard-guitar interplay ever recorded. All 8 tracks showcase a stylistic musical vision and voice that leaps from jazz to fusion to prog and back, usually within each individual track. The great thing about Promised Land is its ability to go completely over the top while still maintaining musical cohesiveness. Songs like the title track "Promised Land" combined a classical theme with an all out shred - keyboard / guitar duel. The second track "The Prisoner" starts off with a way cool Hammond/Leslie organ type riff that sets the tone for the song. This song also contains some of the best guitar moments on the CD with great sweep sequences, rhythmic soloing, and ripping arpeggios found throughout. Another highlight is "The Prophecy" with its high octane, neo-classical vibe. Guitarists, Ferrigno and Leal, absolutely shine on this track ripping through licks with a ferocious feel that reminds me of a young Malmsteen.
There is a wealth of influences that can be heard throughout Promised Land. Bands like Dream Theater, or guitarists like Steve Vai come to mind when listening to this CD. There is some great innovative use of point counterpoint in the soloing between keyboard and guitar, often times creating a nice atmospheric type of tension that drives the music to ever-greater heights. Production value is high on this CD and the sound quality is awesome.
All musicians featured have a total command over their respective instruments. Vitalij Kuprij is the standout on most tracks showcasing himself as a superior player by providing some fresh prospective on fusion and prog influenced keyboard licks and structures.
Promised Land is an intense, brilliantly complex CD. If you like great keyboard - guitar interplay within a progressive structure, you will love Promised Land.
