Like the material on his last effort, "Guitar Noir," these dozen songs take listeners wherever Doyle wants them to go.
Doyle's quite the master on his guitar, coaxing all sorts of sounds that plant all sorts of images.
"Out of the Past" strikes more of a mainstream chord than "Guitar Noir," with Doyle interpreting "Moonlight Drive" and "The Crystal Ship" by the Doors, "Tomorrow Never Knows" and "Eleanor Rigby" from Lennon and McCartney, and "Paint It Black" from Jagger and Richards.
His two originals, the title cut and "Into the Mist," quite successfully fit into the 1960s structures that made those famous songs timeless.
"Out of the Past" has 12 cuts and runs 50:36.
Put it on when: You want to hear a master musician present an individual vision by making the most of many talents. The sum is often dazzling.
