What can one say? His name says it all. And Rock is what he does. He toured with Rare Earth,
the Vinnie Vincent Invasion, Alice Cooper, Iron Maiden, and Nelson. He has had some notable
performances with guitarists Brett Garsed and T. J. Helmrerich on their discs "Quid Pro Quo" and
"Exempt". This relationship has formed the bond for "Out Of Body".
"Out of Body" is 15 tracks long, including three covers and plenty of drum solos. 5 drum solo
compositions to be exact. The sound quality pushes the drums into the forefront. What this does
is not only show the strength of the drums, but to spotlight the other members of the band.
The cover tunes include the Yes hit ROUNDABOUT. This instrumental rendition features the
amazing ability of Australian guitarist Brett Grarsed. The second is a version of WALK THIS WAY.
All the musicians bang out a flawless performance which to the listener appears effortless.
The final cover is the timeless moog monster FRANKENSTEIN. Rock storms his way through this
one, with guitarist Garsed using a harmonizer to create a soundscape in place of the moog solo.
Rocks drumming on this sounds similar to the Edgar Winter Group version, but Rock pushes it to
the next level.
On the original side, FEARLESS is just that, a well composed tune that demonstrates why Rock
is perhaps the best underrated drummer and best kept secret in all of music.
The title track, OUT OF BODY is psychotically bizarre. Garsed's scratch guitar and strange
chords leave the listener feeling uneasy.
HARNAZOWA is one of many compositions on the disc that showcase the talents of bassist Carl
"the Fox" Carter, who performs flawlessly throughout.
LIGHTWORKER is a custom-written composition that allows Rock to demonstrate a technique he
calls "The Octopus." This technique has Rock using 23 different percussive instruments in four
short beats. He uses the entire drum kit, which looks more like a village than a drum set. The
village has four bass drums and nine foot pedals among other percussive gadgets.
FAR JOURNEYS once again utilizes Carter to paint a soundscape which Garsed highlights with a
haunting melody line. LIQUID is another original that is an exercise in complicated melody with an
odd rhythmic bridge.
RED EARTH has Garsed toting a slide guitar that sounds like a retrospect to the Allman
Brothers. The versatility of Garsed shines perhaps brightest on this one. Garsed's guitar mate
T.J. Helmerich also lends a hand.
"Out Of Body" was also engineered by Helmerich. The drums are way out front, which should
produce a disc that has too much drum. Wrong. Rock's amazing ability only enhances the
performances of the other musicians. Every time you listen to the disc, something new is heard.
BOTTOM LINE: Incredible production with outstanding performances by the musicians make this
one of the best disc of 1997.
