an a bass do such things? - Hearing is believing and Stu Hamm is simply incredible. The music on this CD - which I classify as fusion - is as well composed as it is performed. You will hear some modern Jazz, techno and fusion and most incredibly, you will hear the bass pyro-techniques of Stu Hamm. But as the track 2 (Remember) - (guitar by Mark McGee of Greg Allman's band) demonstrates, the people playing with Hamm on this CD are not slouches either - - ).
Ultimately, it is the bass that drives all the songs on this CD. Let's hope we don't have to wait another 9 years for the next release.
All songs are deserving of mention, but I will limit my Highlights to 3 songs:
Track 3 (Remember) mentioned previously
Track 5 (The Memo) which uses the bass as the lead voice with incredible virtuosity and showcases athe guitar of Judah Gold (former member of the Jerry Garcia Band)
Track 6 (The Tenacity of Genes and Dreams) which shows the wonder command of melody and diversity this bass player brings to his compositions.
According to Stu Hamm, 'I try to balance it with things like 'The Star Spangled Banner' and 'Charlotte's Song'; different grooves so that you can enjoy the 60 minutes while the record is on without it being too taxing on the ear, too pretentious, and with a sense of humor.'
Without a doubt, Outbound is a complete, total, and unqualified success. Not taxing to the ears at all, but sometimes boggling to the mind. Can a bass really do such things? - give this CD a spin.
