ess and his mates don't waste any time. When "Exploration" opens up, from
the first split second, they're off and running, maybe being chased, perhaps on the last lap of the race. But it's all GO with Hess.
12 tracks and over an hour long, "Opus 1" sings the mighty praises of the
overdub. No, it couldn't be. Could it? Could three guys really do this stuff without overdubs? WHO CARES? What goes around, comes back in your hair, and sticks. Tom Hess is 1st virtuoso guitar, Mike Walsh is 2nd (but certainly equal), and Scott Hess lends his singular beat to the percussions. Or perhaps it's Chris Dowgun. Hmmm, that's odd. Chris is cited as drummer on the CD, yet Scott Hess gets the credit on the promo paper that came with it. Well, whoever's in charge of bang, he manages to keep up with the rock and hard rock guitars well enough to make "Opus 1" indeed a CD worth checking out, all you instrumental guitar buffs out there.
And it's all written by Tom. Hard to say what was planned and what just happened. And again, so what? The point is that here's an hour of high-energy, sin city, sweet loudness that will put your foot down at yellow lights and ignore all yield signs. Tom does his own bass and keyboard thing too. What an exciting start to a career.
This CD is featured at www.guitar9.com and got a hearty rave from www.georgebellas.com. So if words get in the way of your musical enjoyment, make Hess a stop on your road to hell. Just goes to show ya you ain't
gotta yell to be heard. Dig it!
