Review of "Modern Rock Guitar Vol. 1: Abducted By Aliens"
|
ontinuing with our DIY theme of this issue I'd thought I'd give a plug to Denis Taaffe. Denis is a regular one man band, having recorded and played all the instruments himself on his debut CD,
now that's DIY.
I often get demos and CDs to review and "Modern Rock Guitar Vol..I: Abducted By Aliens" by Denis Taaffe has been without doubt the best in a long while. I normally do not go in for the guitar virtuoso thing (eg. Gambale, Via, Satriani etc); give me a good singer songwriter anytime. I know I'm going to upset people here but to me most of today's guitar virtuoso's have the chops, licks and tricks but could not write a decent melody to save their lives. Dennis Taaffe on the other hand has a great ear for melody. In fact a friend played me some tracks from Jeff Beck's latest CD, and in my humble opinion Beck's CD is BORING, Denis' is better. Now I know that this type of music is not as popular as it once was, but music taste moves in cycles and it is sure to come back again.
Located in Bloomington, Indiana, Denis has been playing guitar for the past fourteen years. He has always been a big fan of instrumental rock guitar music and guitar music in general. Denis has always striven to emphasize melodic playing, unique
techniques and solid guitar tones in his music. When it came time to record for his first CD, Denis was a one-man recording machine, playing all the instruments (including guitar, bass, vocals and drum programming) and recording the music in his
digital 8-track based home studio. Taaffe plans to manufacture CDs of "Modern Rock Guitar, Vol. 1: Abducted By Aliens" to be ready for release in late April of 1999. His song, "The Reef" will be included in the Roland VS-880 User's Group Compilation CD. The CD contains material from the years 1997-1999. The CD was recorded and mixed in his home digital studio. The CD was mastered at Bloomington's Echo Park Studio's by Mark Hood (the
studio's owner, who has worked on with many artists including guitarist John Scofield and many others).
I recommend Denis waste no more time, get himself a good music publisher and manager, and he could be writing hits for established stars soon than he thinks, many of the tracks on the CD could easily be heard on radio no doubt.
Job well done.
