Review of "The Art Of Modern/Primative Guitar"
|
By: James Hutchinson
hawn Persinger is working on a new approach to his music. As the title of
the new CD suggests his music lies somewhere between folk music and
jazz on the one hand, and Michael Hedges and Stravinsky on the other.
Persinger weaves journeys out of his musical compositions. His influences
are so varied that they flash past before you are able to distinguish the Leo
Kottke from the John Zorn. The constant referral to so many influences is
often the sign of a new musical style. Persinger has tried to amalgamate
all his influences (hence the name Modern Primitive Guitar) and produce
musical vignettes that in their brevity can move from concrete discordance
into fingerstyle melody and finish in flamenco. On his 3th solo CD Persinger
has presented a very cleanly recorded collection that highlights his technical
side as well as his fine compositions. Persinger accompanies himself in the
style of a harmonic guitarist such as Robert Fripp but adds rhythm and melody. Technically Persinger uses various tunings, neck bends, scrapes, and slaps
to arrive at his sounds. Listening to The Art of Modern Primitive Guitar is like
taking a train journey through a strange country where all the elements are
familiar but the placement is often surprising, occasionally jarring and in the
end extremely satisfying.
