Review of "The Maze"

By: Michael Knight

letter ack in true form, neo-classical guitar wizard Vinnie Moore packs "The Maze" with his speed on air guitar melodies. Along for the journey are Dave LaRue (bass), Tony MacAlpine (keyboards), and Shane Gaalaas (drums). After his last CD, a foray into boogie, funk, and rock-n-roll, Vinnie seems to have brought some new sounds to the table. While I did hint at this being a neo-classical album, there are spots where the band drops the classical structures and dive into various new directions. The loose flighty feel of some of the more spacey songs and ballads break up the overall sound for a good listen through the whole CD. However, the strong points of the album are still Vinnie's signature triumphant sounds; pedal-point and arpeggio laced classical style melodies ride a wave of higher listening.
