Review of "Making Waves"

By: John Nicholas
reigg Fraser is a Canadian guitarist who has released two self produced instrumental CDs. Both CDs are characterized by a commercial pop rock
sound that also touches on blues, fusion and acoustic guitar. He is a songwriter first, with very little shredding time but a good sense of melody and structure. Though not heavy enough for the typical Shrapnel fan, Greigg's playing will appeal to fans of Satriani and Eric Johnson.
His first CD, "Making Waves", begins with "The Plunge", a mid-tempo number that features nice clean guitar with loss of chorus that reminded me of "Grace Under Pressure"-era Rush behind a Satriani style melody. This recipe is also used to good effect on the upbeat "Getting A Grip" and "Providence". "Many Apologies", a bluesy rocker, and "Heavy Water" take Greigg into a heavier vein. He heads the other direction with "Ravar" and "Leo", two fingerstyle acoustic guitar pieces. All the songs are well played and produced though the synth/drum machine backgrounds could be more energetic.
