Trey Gunn Band

"Live Encounter"

The Story
Guitarist Trey Gunn's CD "Live Encounter" features nine live recordings (and a bonus Quicktime video) taken from tours in September 2000 and February 2001. Reviewer Chris J. Walker summed it up in the LA Jazz Scene when he wrote about the album, "Fusion music is often thought to be just loud, bombastic, and balls out jamming. But, guitarist Trey Gunn who's part of the King Crimson family displayed the more refined points of the genre with his quartet featuring guitarist Tony Geballe, drummer/percussionist Bob Muller, and bassist/guitarist Joe Mendelson. That's not to say the group didn't jam, boy did they ever. Nevertheless, their set at the Baked Potato in Hollywood was the ultimate balance of power and symmetry. Gunn and cohorts gracefully interspersed progressive rock, funk, ambient, and fusion elements with the precision of a Swiss watchmaker while showcasing tunes from his latest CD "The Joy of Molybdenum." Not a note or chord was out of place, but the most amazing aspect of the experience was that the band flowed almost effortlessly through their various selections."
