"Liquid Fire - The Best Of" features a compilation of tracks from six outstanding John Scofield albums from the mid-1980s, "Electric Outlet", "Still Warm", "Blue Matter", "Pick Hits/Live", "Loud Jazz" and "Flat Out". By turns funky and brainy, twangy and swinging, this music occupied its own little niche in jazz history. Working his magic for three and a half years in Miles Davis' group in the early '80s, Scofield began recording the first of these six albums, "Electric Outlet", in 1984. This record, and the the five that followed, came to define the "Scofield sound:" gritty, stereo guitar, tasty keyboards, electric bass, catchy inventive melodies, and consistently amazing solos. "Liquid Fire - The Best Of" is an excellent introduction to this particular phase of Scofield's long career.
