This tune began as a simple lick, but I was stuck
there until I shared it with a friend. He helped me
shake out of the rut and see that the tune could go in
many directions. I went home and finished the piece.
Later I found that he had also written his own piece
based on the starting idea. Our two songs are quite
different, but share a common thread. Tuning: DADGAD

People tell me this tune reminds them of a game or
children playing, which inspired the title. Tuning:

Dedicated to my father-in-law, who was overheard
saying that something “stuck out like a well thumb on
a sore hand”. I thought it’d make a good title, and
set out to write a piece in a “thumbpicking” style.
The tune itself was an attempt to capture some of the
style of one of my favorite guitarists, Pat Kirtley.

This is a favorite tune by a friend and fine guitarist
from Ketchikan, Alaska. Chris wrote this tune for his
daughter. The original recording can be found on

This Fleetwood Mac tune was always one of my favorites
when I played electric guitar in a band, and it was
fun to revisit it on solo guitar. The tuning was
inspired by Stephen Bennett. I’d have never thought to
raise the low E string to F! Dedicated to Terri F.,
who has sung it more times than either of us can
count. Tuning: FADEAE

them. I played this one for her late at night. Tuning:

The readers of the Usenet group
rec.music.makers.guitar.acoustic (RMMGA) organized a
project in which we arranged a traditional tune, and
then shared and compared each others’ arrangements.
This was my contribution. Tuning: DADGAD

This tune was inspired by several John Renbourn tunes
I was working on while preparing to attend a workshop
with John. Unfortunately, my flight was to leave on
Sept 12, 2001. As I finished the tune, I found myself
reflecting on the events of that week and how people’s
lives can be changed by forces they cannot control.

I originally envisioned this tune as a duet, and first
recorded a version with multiple guitars, bass and
drums. This is a reworked version for solo guitar. My
wife says it sounds like something I should be playing
on a row boat out on a lake at night. Tuning: Standard

I wrote this song as I was finishing this CD. I had a
guitar tuned to a tuning I don’t normally use, and
this tune appeared. Tuning: Open G.

play on a quiet evening or a lazy afternoon. Tuning:
