Les Sabler
"Hidden Treasure"
|
Phil Matlock of PAC, "With the release of "Hidden Treasure", Les Sabler has joined the ranks of Eric Essix, Victor Biglione and Torsten De Winkle. Sabler's guitar playing is dynamic like John Scofield's, melodic like George Benson's, and compelling like Jeff Beck's. But, Sabler's sound isn't just a conglomeration of influences, his playing is clearly, and refreshingly his own. The opening cut "Papamel" utilizes the collaboration of Sabler and saxophonist Steve Gould for rich and challenging phrasing. "Luminescence" shifts easily between the ethereal and the grit usually found in Jeff Beck's fusion efforts. On the title track, Sabler stretches out over some soulful phrasing that is reminiscent of both Benson and Santana. Continuing with the Santana influence, Sabler works his way inside the samba of "Winter Fiesta" to emerge in appealing solos. Ultimately "Hidden Treasure" provides fresh, imaginative guitar work."
