Trying to classify Michael Hewett's musical approach on his CD, Hidden In Plain Sight, offers a number of interesting challenges. His approach to acoustic guitar is aggressive as it is supple, staggeringly accurate while continuously flowing, selfishly composed yet undeniably hooky. The fuel behind each note on the album is the unapologetic, discriminate intention of healing the listener, all the time without the use of any overdubs or studio tricks. The honesty and balance running through these compositions bears root to Hewett's devotion to his daily practice of yoga and meditation. He teaches yoga for a living in Manhattan, while working as a musician at night. The busyness and strain of the schedule leaves no time for second guessing the music as it reveals itself, the technical prowess he has harnessed for the pieces is consciously balanced with melodic simplicity and harmonic intricacy. All of the pieces on Hidden In Plain Sight are original and executed live on one acoustic guitar in any of the thirteen tunings Hewett uses as his palette. A full spectrum of techniques is used to simultaneously hold down basslines, percussion, harmony as well as unsacrificed, independent melodies. Instrumental Guitar (Acoustic/Progressive), total running time, 32:21 - Michael Hewett @ iTunes!
